Read page 704. Who were Frost’s first teachers? What was his early profession? Describe the setting of much of Frost’s poetry. Define blank verse and free verse Tone Imagery

“Mending Wall” Read lines 1-4 and determine the number of stressed syllables in each line. Are these lines written in blank verse or free verse? Using your knowledge of the setting, why is the wall made of stone? Line 2 indicates that the ground swells and “…spills the upper boulders in the sun.” Explain the image created here. What is the significance of the image?

“Mending Wall” Why do the two neighbors meet annually? Explain the significance of line 15, “We keep the wall between us as we go.” How are the stones described? Describe each man’s position on the necessity of the wall. What tone is created in lines 32-33?
