5.2 Grammar: Negation with Nunca, Nadie, Nada and Tampoco

Negation with the word “NO” REPASO: To make a statement negative, put a NO before the verb. Ex. Ella es alta. Ella no es alta. She is tall. She is not tall. She is tall. She is not tall.

NUNCA (never) & TAMPOCO (neither, not either) Nunca and Tampoco can be used in the place of the word “NO” or they can be added near the end of the sentence if the sentence already contains the word “NO”. Nunca and Tampoco can be used in the place of the word “NO” or they can be added near the end of the sentence if the sentence already contains the word “NO”. Ex: Tú nunca cantas. Tú no cantas nunca. Tú no cantas nunca. You never sing. You never sing. Ex: Tú tampoco bailas. Tú no bailas tampoco. Tú no bailas tampoco. You don’t dance either. You don’t dance either.

NADA (nothing, not anything) Use “Nada” to mean nothing as the subject of a sentence. Ex: Nada es fácil. Nothing is easy. Use “no” before the verb and “nada” after the verb to mean “nothing” or “not anything”. Ex: No necesito nada. I don’t need anything. I don’t need anything.

NADIE (nobody, not anybody) Nadie means “nobody”. To say “not anybody” use no before the verb and nadie after the verb. Nadie means “nobody”. To say “not anybody” use no before the verb and nadie after the verb. Ex. Nadie va a la playa. Nobody goes to the beach. Nobody goes to the beach. Ex. ¿Por qué no va a nadie a la playa? Why doesn’t anybody go to the beach?
