2 Terrorism and Causes Terrorism is the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims. Terrorists most likely have a motive. Terrorist attacks are usually done to gain social and political justice. Terrorism also occurs because some people believe that violent means justify the ends.

3 Nuclear Weapons Nuclear weapons are small devices that use nuclear reactions to cause an extremely large explosion. PROS: The fact of having nuclear weapons, and letting the rest of the world know, provides a great amount of security. CONS: The largest con that comes with these types of weapons is the sheer power that they possess. Entire towns can be leveled and thousands of lives can be lost in an instant. The effects are absolutely devastating

4 September 11, 2001 On September 11, 2001, 19 men hijack four fuel- loaded commercial airlines bound for west coast destinations. Osama Bin Laden was the leader of this attack. A total of 2,977 people were killed in New York City, Washington, DC and outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania, making this the worst terrorist attack in history.

5 Possession of Nuclear weapons What would happen if terrorists were to gain possession of nuclear weapons? A blockade of trade with other countries would occur. The US would strengthen their relationships with rival countries. The next nuclear attack would be bound to happen.

6 Effects of 9/11 Increase airport security The US as a country became a lot stronger and more prepared for other attacks similar to this. Increased support to attack Osama Bin Laden.

7 Solutions to prevent terrorist attacks Cut off trade with other countries Create a rehab center for terrorists Send troops overseas to fight terrorist groups

8 What started the idea of terrorist attacks? A high demand for oil in the Middle East lead to US involvement with other countries. People thought that this idea would help solve their countries problem, without thinking about how it would affect other countries.

9 Effects of Nuclear Weapons Nuclear weapons produce immediate and delayed effects. Immediate: Blast, thermal radiation, and prompt ionizing radiation cause significant destruction within seconds or minutes of a nuclear explosions. Delayed: Radioactive fallout and other environmental effects, inflict damage over an extended period ranging from hours to years.

10 Abolishing Nuclear Weapons The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) is a global campaign coalition working to mobilize people in all countries to inspire, persuade and pressure their governments to initiate negotiations for a treaty banning nuclear weapons.

11 The start of Nuclear Weapons The world's first nuclear weapons explosion on July 16, 1945 in New Mexico, when the United States tested its first nuclear bomb. On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. It killed or wounded nearly 130,000 people. Three days later, the United States bombed Nagasaki.
