5 An 18 month needs to learn an average of 5 new words a day to have an average vocabulary of nearly 8,000 words by the time he or she is 6 years old (Senechal & Cornell, 1993) How Many Words?

6 An average high school graduate knows approximately 40,000 words How Many Words?

7 To go from 8,000 to 40,000 in 12 years, a child needs to learn 32,000 words or 7-8 words a day. How Many Words?

8 Children typically learn 3,000 words a year (over 8 words a day) between 3 rd and 12 th grades (Nagy & Anderson, 1984) How Many Words?

10 Pat decided that it was time to move on with his life. He was tired of the stresses in his job and had always dreamed of being a travel guide! To be able to see the world, meet new people, and experience cultures of far away lands all in a day’s work would be beyond belief. He just needed to find the opportunity and his new life would bring him all over the world. As if by miracle, the very next day Pat learned that the travel agency just a block from his home was looking for a travel guide! First stop? Sicily! And so his adventures began! Then she said, “Mr. Spear is XXXXX of the XXXXX.” Albert felt something XXXXX inside his XXXXX. “When’s he XXXXX back? Today?” Ms. Dali didn’t hear him, because XXXXX was XXXXX questions all at once. “One at a time,” she said, and called on Safa. “Can he XXXXX now?” Safa asked. “A XXXXX, but he isn’t XXXXX much XXXXX.
