5 The Present Continuous

6 The Present Continuous Use
1.Actions happening now. I’m using John’s phone because I left mine at home. 2.Temporary actions. She’s working very hard these days. 3.Changing or developing situations The weather is getting hotter and hotter. 4.Annoying habits. You’re always borrowing money! Stative verbs are not used in continuous forms: appear, resemble, seem, be, exist, forget, like. understand, realise, know, believe, love, hate, need, doubt, imagine, have, suppose, prefer, own, possess, hear, smell, sound, taste, concern, cost, fit, notice, see, look, want, wish

7 Some verbs can be used in continuous tenses with a change of meaning

1.Actions started in the past and are still true. She has had her bike for over 6 years. 2.Actions continuing up to now. We’ve travelled by many means of transport. 3.Actions in the past but time is not mentioned (life experience) Have you ever flown by helicopter? 4.Present result is more important I’ve booked the flight tickets.

13 The Present Perfect WATCH OUT It’s the first/second time I’ve been on a plane. Have you flown before? She has never been to France. She’s been in France for a week. Rain has just/already started. People still haven’t discovered life on other planets It’s been a long time since we started work. We’ve lived in this neighborhood for ten years. I’ve visited two foreign countries so far.
