Metrics 1. In science class we always use the METRIC system when making measurements. 2. Two reasons why scientists use the metric system and not the American system of measurements is because: a. The metric system is accepted and recognized all over the WORLD. b. The metric system is based on units of 10.
4
Metrics 3. The metric system is also called the SI, which means the INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM OF UNITS.
5
Length, Mass, & Volume (MGL) Length is the distance between two points –measured in meters. Mass is the amount of matter in an object –measured in grams. Volume is the amount of space taken up by an object –measured in liters. Basic unit
6
Density, Time, & Temperature Density is the mass per unit volume –measured in kilogram per cubic meter (kg/m 3 ). Time –measured in seconds. Temperature measured in kelvins. Basic unit VS.
7
The Tools Length – Meter stick or ruler Volume – Graduated cylinder Mass – Balance or scale
8
The Tools Denisty – Formula: mass/volume Time– Clock or watch Temperature – thermometer
