February 24, 2015 Risk Based testing

February 24, 2015 2 What is Risk Based Testing? Process of focusing a project's testing activities on the most important tests that will mitigate the highest amount of risk will increase test effectiveness while potentially resulting in fewer tests thus reducing cost while maintaining or increasing test effectiveness.

February 24, 2015 3 What are the Objectives of Risk Based Testing? –To focus attention on minimizing threats to achievement of the solution delivery objectives. –Proactively identify, analyze, and address risks throughout the project lifecycle. –To provide a systematic approach for: Identifying and assessing risk-based tests at requirement level Determining cost-effective risk reduction actions Monitoring and reporting progress in reducing risk Adjust risk reduction actions (tests) based upon the effectiveness of prior actions or additional knowledge.

February 24, 2015 4 Benefits of Using Risk Based Testing Reduce overall cost of fixing defects by identifying poorly written requirements early in the development lifecycle. Provides vehicle for business, development and test teams to align on assumptions that drive the test strategy and planning process.

February 24, 2015 5 Risk Profile After Analyze, Design and Build phase the risk based testing template is used to re- evaluate the risk of the project. A graph can be created to see if risk is trending up or down. The following graph uses Total Risk Factors at the end of Analyze, Design and Build phase. Total Risk Factor is the summation of risk scores of all the requirements.

February 24, 2015 6 Risk Assessment Template Req. ID: This is automatically filled in from the information you entered in the K245 & QC Upload Worksheet Definition: This is automatically filled in from the information you entered in the K245 & QC Upload Worksheet Req. Type: This is automatically filled in from the information you entered in the K245 & QC Upload Worksheet Constraints/Risks: This is automatically filled in from the information you entered in the K245 & QC Upload Worksheet Test Risk Mitigation Approach: Elaborates the proactive and contingent response actions planned to reduce the risk. These should be the avoidance approaches for mitigating the various risks that are expected. The approach should depict a high level description for what you are going to test for the requirement. Impacted Systems: The list of all the applications impacted by the project requirement. Testable Requirement (Yes/No): Based on the risk-based testing process, the requirements should be categorized as testable or non-testable. Enter the value as "Yes" or "No" in this column based on the analysis made on the testability of the requirements. Risk Assessments: Risk Assessment parameters calculate the risk factor at the time the risk was identified.

February 24, 2015 7 Impact,Probability and Level of Control Impact: This is an estimate of the overall scale of impact if a defect related to the change were found in production. Rated on a scale of 1-3 Probability: This is an assessment of the probability of an error being delivered into production at a point in time Level of Control :This indicates the relative control which can be exerted on the probability of the risk occurring in production. Moreover, Level of Control attempts to introduce a 'modifier' which quantifies the level of control which can be exerted over implementing that response. Rated on a scale of 1-3 Risk Factor: The Risk Factor is calculated based on the assessment of probability, impact and level of control in the current project lifecycle phase. This is evaluated in Analyze, Design and Build phases. It quantifies each risk as shown in the mathematical expression below: Risk Factor =Probability x Impact Level of Control
