2. Roles A role is a set of behavioral expectations associated with a given status.

What is the difference between a status and a role? “We occupy a status, we play a role”

Role Expectation a: is a group’s or society’s definition of the way a specific role ought to be played. Role performance: is how a person actually plays the role. These do not always match

Role ambiguity: Occurs when the expectations associated with a role are unclear. -Children and parents: When does the provider/dependant relationship end? -When a student exits high school.

Role Conflict vs. Role Strain Role Conflict: occurs when incompatible role demands are placed on a person by two more statuses held at the same time. Solutions: - “Prioritize” (what is most important first) - “Compartmentalize” (perform role related activities at one time and others later)

Role Strain: occurs when incompatible demands are built into a single status that a person occupies. Examples: o Women in the labor force o Men at home o Sexual orientation o Occupations Solutions? “ROLE DISTANCING”

Role Exit: occurs when people disengage from social roles that have been central to their self-identity. ie. Ex-convicts, ex-nuns, ex-husband/wife, retirees, homeless,

FROM YOUR TEXT  Describe the 4 step process of ROLE EXIT.  Provide an example of someone who may go through this with examples of how they might go through this process.
