3 My City is Better Than Your City  Irrigation improved.  Farmers grew more than enough food.  Populations increased.  Trade increased.

4 My City is Better Than Your City  Other jobs became important:  Bakers  Weavers  Leather crafters

5 My City is Better Than Your City  Towns grew into cities with thousands of people.  Each city was a city-state (like a separate country).

6 My City is Better Than Your City  The early city- states were rivals and would often fight their neighbors.

7 I’ll Trade You Copper for a Necklace  Before money was used, deals were made by bartering.  Bartering means to trade by exchanging one good for another Farmers would trade barley for mats, tools, and pottery
