We’re (Great Britain) in debt from the French and Indian War (1756- 1763; British vs. French) Still some good news- British won so you colonists don’t have to worry about the pesky French! So… we need money And to make money, we are going to tax the colonies… because we can!!!

The Writing Act You will be taxed two skittles if you are using a pencil to write (Do not cheat or your taxes will double!!) The Hair Act If you have blonde or red hair you will be taxed two skittles. The Shirt Act If you are wearing a blue or green shirt you will be taxed three skittles. The Age Act If you are under the age of 16, you will be taxed one skittle. The Eye Act If you have brown eyes you will be taxed two skittles.

You can no longer talk to your classmates (or you will be taxed four skittles) The Queen can search your book bag and take any items that she has not collected a tax on. The Queen can take your lunch for the British soldiers in the colonies You have to pay two skittles to talk to get out of your seat or talk to the Queen.

British parliament passed a series of taxes without the consent of the colonists Stamp Act- tax on official documents Petitioned and boycotted because this was “taxation w/o representation” Parliament repealed the act.

Townshend Duties- paper, paint, glass, tea, and lead Colonists protest British send in troops and forced colonists to quarter the soldiers Repealed Tea Act British still need to pay for debt, so tax on tea Boston Tea Party A group of colonists dressed as Indians dumped chests of tea into the Boston Harbor. (Protest) Parliament passes the Intolerable Acts

Intolerable Acts- Boston harbor closed, MA legislature suspended, British have power to appoint all officials in MA, royal officials to be tried for crimes in Great Brtiain (3,731 miles away!)

Continental Congress meets American Revolution begins April 1775 when British troops and armed colonists fired on one another at Lexington and Concord Second Continental Congress meets and forms its own army- Continental Army led by George Washington. Declaration of Independence signed July 4, 1776
