2. 2 As a designer considers the effects of a single plant or plant mass on the exterior environment, additional thought must be given to the way in which the viewer will react within the composition. The primary design components are the physical units that support the design and are: Direction and Pooling

3. 3 Direction moderates the physical movement within a landscape space. A designer may control the visual experiences within the composition by allowing movement only in a specific direction or area.

4. 4 Pooling, on the other hand, defines the outdoor rooms desired by the designer. As viewers are directed throughout a composition, it may be desirable to expand the size of the perceived space and alter available experiences.

6. 6 Enframement draws attention to a focal area or important view within the composition or to an offsite feature. It may be accomplished by using trees or shrubs that project into the visual plant.

7. 7 Linkage visually joins one space or object to another space or object.

8. 8 Enlargement or reduction is the ability to change the apparent size of a composition. It may be accomplished by varying the degree of enclosure of the space.

9. 9 Invitation denotes the use of stimulation, suggestion, or curiosity to pull a viewer into or through a space. It may be accomplished with moving objects or with bright, sudden changes of color.

10. 10 Subdivision is the use of plant materials to divide a large space into smaller components or to create a small space within a large one.
