Monochromatic Painting Painting with one color plus black and white

Vocabulary For This Lesson Hue = A color’s name. Monochromatic= of only one color. A monochromatic painting uses a single hue plus black to shade and white to tint. Shade = to add black to a color to achieve darker hues. Tint = to add white to a color to achieve lighter hues. Still life = grouping of objects set up to draw. Portrait = a drawing of a person.

Recall Prior Learning Value Scale Done in black and White showing all of the middle grays in between. This will be applied to your Monochromatic painting to achieve as many hues of one color as possible. HOW MANY STEPS ARE IN A VALUE SCALE?

This how the value scale that you created previously applies to this project. The outcome and technique are the same only in color with the use of tint and shade.

What do I mean by “implied” light source?

When the value scale is applied to an object, it Can make it appear 3-dimensional. Here is the Value scale in pencil applied to a sphere. It was Drawn as a flat circle. Shading has changed it’s appearance. ***Notice the direction of the implied light source.

Possible color choices with Value scale applied monochromatically.

Do not forget that you can shade your painting with a darker version of your color…not just black.

This how the monochromatic color scale can be applied to a painting. Notice all of the values that were pulled from that 1 shade of green.

Monochromatic color scheme in nature. This is an actual photograph.

When you tint your car windows they turn black… but in ART when you tint something you add white. Actually… it is my business

Here it is in red. The artist used more white and tinted rather than shaded this chart. What is tinting in art? What is shading in art?

Here are some paintings done with a red monochromatic color scheme. This one isabstract. What does abstract mean ?

Still life. What is still life? This is a portrait. What is a portrait? Who is the artist this portrait?

Blue color scheme Landscape with 1 point perspective. Things get ______as they go back into space?

Is this painting abstract or still life? What is a painting of a person called?

Monochromatic still life in purple. Can you spot 9 different values of purple within this piece?

These 2 still life paintings were created using mostly tint to achieve an overall lighter value.

Examples of celebrity portraits painted monochromatically

Project Agenda/ Directions DAY 1 1.Choose your subject matter. Are you going to attempt stiil life, portraiture, self portraits, abstract art or something of your unique choice? 2.If doing still life, refer back to prior lesson on drawing composing, overlapping, balance, proportion, horizon line, etc.. Practice sketching as much as needed. Practice makes what? 3. Once you finish sketching, then you must choose a color to use. Choose a hue from which you can easily achieve many values by tinting and shading. Here’s a tip: yellows and oranges do not turn out as well as reds and cool colors monochromatically. 4. On your blank 9 step value chart, practice painting using your hue monochromatically. I have put several blank value scales in your folder so please practice until you get the 9 step gradation correct.

4. Practice pulling the values from a few different hues if you are not happy with your intitial results. Refer to your pencil shaded value scale as needed to achieve as many values between dark and light versions of your hue. 5. REMEMBER: It is easier to start with your darkest values and work your way towards the lighter ones in this type of shading. 6. Take your time. Be neat. Focus on each portion of the lesson. Work independently. Clean up behind yourself daily.

AGENDA FOR DURATION OF PROJECT Sketch out your portrait or still life onto larger art paper. Paint in your portrait using your monochromatic value scale. Do your best work everyday. Remember your rubric requirements and use time wisely. You have 7-8 class days for this project so be neat and pay attention to detail.

You have been given many options. You must choose which direction to take in your painting. My only criteria is that you paint monochromatically and follow my rubric. The creativity is up to you.

Please…know what you are going to do before you do it. Do not just pick the wrong thing and regret it later. Planning is Key y’all!

BE THE BABY…EVERYDAY! CLEAN UP YOUR MESSES AND PUT AWAY BRUSHES PROPERLY.
