Brave Melissa Let’s read the first paragraph of “Brave Melissa”.
The title of the story tells us that Melissa is brave. I wonder what she does that makes her brave? As I read I learn she is responsible because she walks her dog every day. Later I read that her dog falls through the ice, and Melissa bravely rescues him.

Monitor and Clarify Finish reading the story.
At the end of paragraph 2, I ask myself, What happened? I don’t understand how Melissa’s dog ended up in the water, so I reread the paragraph. Then I understand that after Melissa fell, the dog kept going without her. That’s how he fell through the frozen ice on the lake.
