9.3 Measuring Weight and Temperature
2
Weight Weight is the measure of gravitational pull on an object In the English system: 16 ounces = 1 pound (lb) 2000 pounds = 1 ton (T)
3
Metric Weight The metric system uses grams (g) as the basic unit of weight. A very heavy object is measured in metric tonnes (t) kg hg dag g dg cg mg 1 metric tonne = 1000 kg 1 metric tonne = 2200 lbs The metric tonne is about 10% bigger than the English ton
4
Example Convert 8.7 dg = ______mg 950 mg = _________g
5
Volume and weight of water in metric 1 cm 3 = 1 g 1000 cm 3 = 1 m 3 = 1 kg 1 m 3 = 1000 kg or 1 tonne
6
Example A tank holds 0.25 m 3 of water. How much does it weigh?
7
Comparing English and metric 1 oz. = 28 g 1 lb = 0.45 kg 1 ton (T) = 0.9 tonne (t)
8
Example: convert 160 lb = ________kg 300 g = _______oz 200 t = _______ T
9
Example The dosage of a drug is 1.2 mg per kg of body weight. How much should be given to a man who weighs 186 lbs?
10
Temperature There are two ways to measure temperature Celsius and Fahrenheit.
11
Examples 50 C = ______ F 59 F = ______C
