1 THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH THE POWERS OF THE PRESIDENT

2 TREATY POWER  The president has the power to negotiate treaties with foreign governments  Chief Diplomat  The treaties need to be approved by the Senate with a 2/3 vote

3 APPOINTMENT POWER  The president is allowed to appoint his advisors and leading officials in the United States  Cabinet members, White House staff, Federal judges, etc.  Approval is needed by 2/3 vote in Senate

4 LEGISLATIVE POWERS  Propose legislation  The president has certain topics he wants to get across during his term(s) in office  He announces it each January to joint session of Congress  Veto Power  Reject certain bills that pass Congress that he does not like

5 OTHER POWERS  Special Sessions  He can call Congress to meet when he deems necessary (war, budget, etc.)  Pardon federal criminals  Excepts impeachment  Example: Ford pardoned Nixon from Watergate scandal

6 MILITARY ACTION  Respond to certain crisis's  9/11, Hurricane Katrina, Haiti earthquake, etc.  Libya/vietnam  Can be limited by Congress and declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court

7 CABINET DEPARTMENTS  Justice  State  Treasury  Interior  Agriculture  Commerce  Labor  Defense  Health and Human Services  Housing and Urban Development  Transportation  Energy  Education  Homeland Security
