In 1066 the last Anglo-Saxon king Edward the Confessor died Problem he had no kids Two men claimed that Edward had promised them the throne William, Duke of Normandy (a distant cousin) Harold Godwinson (brother in law) Had the backing of Witan (a council of English lords) The Problem

Harald Hardrada, a Viking, wanted to take the throne (encouraged by Tostig Godwinson) Invaded England Harold took his army to fight the Vikings Harald was killed William seeing his chance invaded England from the South Harold immediately took his army to meet William Meanwhile

William defeated Harold easily Harold was killed when he was shot in the eye with an arrow On Christmas Day William was crowned King of England William the Conqueror

Took most English titles from the Anglo-Saxons and gave them to his Normans Normans became the ruling class Old nobles were now peasants Problem: William was French (he didn’t speak English) He tried to learn as did his fellow Normans Because of this the English language was changed to include French words William the King

Created a census book which listed every man, woman, and animal in England Known as the Domesday Book First census taken since the collapse of the Roman Empire Was used for centuries to determine land rights Was best census taken until the 1900s William’s Legacy
