WHAT ARE BEATITUDES? Beatitudes are a set of guidelines from Jesus. Beatitudes guide and encourage us to imitate God and change our sinful lifestyle to one of true happiness in God. Beatitudes can be referred to in making moral decisions and in shaping our conscience.

Beatitudes are like signposts on the road of holiness.

Bible Mt.5:3-10 Blessed are the poor in spirit:theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn:they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek:they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness:they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” “They are those who have unwavering faith in God. They are spiritually rich. Lesson:Develop a closer bond with God.

“Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.” “Those who mourn” means people who suffer, mourn for others, or repent and do great penance for their sins. They will be comforted and be given hope by the love of God.

“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” The meek are the compassionate and the patient. They will get the earth because they will preserve it and take care of it.

“Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.” These are the people who long for peace, justice and truth. They will be provided peace of heart by God.

“Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” They have the ability to forgive and forget and do not hold grudges. They can “turn the other cheek”. They will be shown mercy for their sins at the Judgment.

“Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.” Their hearts and souls filter out all worldly distractions like power and wealth so they see a clear image of God.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” GOD=LOVE=PEACE God called us all to be like Him as His children. Only those who truly have love and peace in their hearts can be called true children of God.

“Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.” These are the people who fight(and die)for righteousness and have the courage to speak out against oppression. They could be martyrs, heroes, saints, or ordinary people. In the Philippines, we have Ninoy Aquino II who died for democracy and freedom.
