CPM Chapter 3 Vocabulary

absolute value The distance of a number from zero on a number line.

coordinate graph A system of graphing ordered pairs of numbers on a coordinate plane.

decimal The point between the whole number in the ONES PLACE and the number in the TENTHS place in a decimal number.

equivalent fractions and ratios

fraction

integers Whole numbers (not fractions) that can be positive, negative or zero.

least common multiple The smallest common multiple of a set of two or more integers.

lowest terms/ simplest form A fraction for which the numerator and the denominator have no common factor greater than one.

multiplicative identity If any number or expression is multiplied by the number 1, the result is equal to the original number or expression.

opposite The same number but with the opposite sign (+ or −). The additive inverse.

ordered pairs Two numbers written in order as follows: (x, y). The first coordinate (x) represents the horizontal distance from the origin. The second coordinate (y) represents the vertical distance from the origin.

origin The point on a coordinate plane where the x-axis and y-axis intersect. This point has coordinates (0, 0). Also, the point assigned to zero on a number line.

percent A ratio that compares a number to 100.

point An exact location in space. In a coordinate plane, an ordered pair shows its location.

portion A part of something; a part of a whole.

prime factors A factor that is a prime number.

quadrants The coordinate plane is divided into four of these.

ratio Compares two quantities by division. Usually represented as a fraction.

sample A subset (group) of a given population with the same characteristics as the whole population.

scale drawing A drawing that shows a real object with accurate sizes except they have all been reduced or enlarged by a certain amount (called the scale factor).

simplify To write a less complicated expression with the same value.

x-axis The horizontal number line on a coordinate grid.

x-coordinate In an ordered pair, (x, y), it is the value of the x.

y-axis The vertical number line on a coordinate grid.

y-coordinate In an ordered pair, (x, y), it is the value of the y.
