Short Story Structure There are five structural components that are generally found within a short story… 1. Exposition 2. Rising Action 3. Climax 4. Falling Action 5. Resolution

1. Exposition 2. Rising Action Introduces the story’s characters, setting, and conflict Occurs as complications, twists, or intensifications of the conflict occur Definitions of Structural Components

3. Climax 4. Falling Action The story’s most dramatic moment The point of no return The logical result of the climax Definitions of Structural Components

Stated theme Implied theme Often expressed directly The author reveals through setting, point of view and the actions of the characters Theme – main idea, or message in a literary work. It is not the subject of a story but is an insight about life or human nature.

Distinctive use of language that conveys the author’s or narrator’s personality to the reader The voice may be determined by word choices, tone, an author’s attitude toward his or her subject or audience and mood (the emotional quality of a literacy work) Voice of the character

Conflict Internal conflict Takes place within the mind of the character External conflict takes place between a character and an outside force (nature, society, fate)
