2. The Directory In 1795 another Constitution is drafted. An executive group of five men is established called the Directory. The Directory was corrupt and inefficient. The French grow restless with high prices and food shortages. Napoleon restores order and fights the Second Coalition. Napoleon takes power in a coup d’etat in 1799.

3. Napoleon’s Empire 1799 - 1814 is known as the Napoleonic Era. Napoleon took the title of First Consul. The people voted on Napoleon’s new Constitution by plebiscite, yes or no. Law was codified into the Napoleonic Code. The National Bank of France was established. A national education system

4. Napoleon Continued Napoleon also repairs relations with the Catholic Church with the Concordat. Napoleon through diplomacy broke up the Second Coalition. In 1804 Napoleon crowns himself Emperor. Napoleon’s greatest enemy is the British Empire. The British defeat the French at the Battle of Trafalgar. Lord Nelson is killed.

5. Napoleons Grand Scheme Napoleon’s Continental System was an economic blockade on Britain. Napoleon defeats the Third Coalition, Austerlitz is his greatest victory. Napoleon organizes Germany and Italy into confederations. Napoleon fights the British for Spain and Portugal in the Peninsular wars. Napoleon tries to conquer Russia. Defeated and sent to Elba.

7. The Congress of Vienna Napoleon escapes from Elba, defeated by Lord Wellington at Waterloo in 1815. The Congress of Vienna meets to stop the spread of Revolution. Four main powers, Great Britain, Austria, Russia, and Prussia. Castlereagh, Metternich, Alexander I, and Frederick William III. Talleyrand from France also. Met to establish legitimacy - monarchy.

9. The Congress of Vienna The Congress of Vienna wanted to restore all former kings to the throne, maintain a balance of power in the world, weaken France, the countries that suffered must be compensated. France had to pay an indemnity. Revolutions put down brutally, by the Quadruple Alliance. Reactionaries allowed no Constitutional government.
