WARM UP Bring your notebook, pencil, colored pencils, and agenda to your desk Grab the weekly warm up from the front table Complete Monday’s warm up now YOU ARE QUIET, WORKING WHEN THE BELL RINGS
3
Today’s Agenda Tracking our lastest test on Energy and Heat Transfer Read Unpacked standard for the Electromagnetic Spectrum popcorn style Begin new standard
4
Tracking our last test.. You will receive your tracking sheet You will receive your pre test bubble sheet Record your pre test score in the box for standard 6.P.3.1 Now you will receive your post test bubble sheet Record your post test score in the box for standard 6.P.3.1 Did you receive a score of ≥73% = near mastery Did you receive a score of ≥80% = mastery Pass everything back in now…
5
Interactive Notebook Q2 Label Next Available Page: 6.P.3.2 Electromagnetic Spectrum Number page to match Table of Contents entry
6
Unpacked Standard Please take out your standard from earlier when we started this unit We will read this out loud today popcorn style
7
Turn and Talk to your table partner – 1 minute You are sitting outside in the sun….. 1. How do you know the sun is giving off energy?
8
Who wants to share with the Class? Volunteers? You can feel the heat from the sun (infrared) You can see different colors (visible light) Your skin can absorb the sun’s rays giving you a tan (ultraviolet)
9
Write these notes The Sun’s Energy: – a major energy source for Earth – This energy reaches Earth by radiation – Travels through electromagnetic waves
10
Write these notes…. These waves of energy make up the electromagnetic spectrum.
11
Write these notes: Light and electromagnetic waves from the Sun WARM objects.
12
Write these notes: An objects temperature increases depending on: how intense the light striking the surface is, how long the light shines on the object, how much of the light is absorbed.
13
Let’s see if we understand Which object would have a higher temperature? how intense the light striking the surface is: a bright light vs. a dim light how long the light shines on the object: 1 hour in light vs. 8 hours in light how much of the light is absorbed: a black rough surface vs. a white shiny surface
14
Electromagnetic Spectrum Handout!
15
Electromagnetic Spectrum Handout for your notebook!
16
Add this to your foldable along the bottom Remember this statement Roxy May Is Victorious Using X-box and GameCube
17
Write these notes on the arrow Wavelength is decreasing from Left to Right (Radio to Gamma) Wavelength again is the distance between crest to crest…. Compare wavelength of radio waves to that of gamma waves
18
Write these notes on the arrow Energy is increasing from LEFT to RIGHT (Radio to Gamma) Frequency is increasing from LEFT to RIGHT (Radio to Gamma)
19
Take notes on your foldable Turn your foldable sideways and write this information:
20
Radio Write the notes for radio waves in the space provided: low energy and low frequency have the longest wavelength (can be as BIG as buildings) carry signals for radios, TVs, and cell phones
21
Microwave Write these notes for microwaves: Used for heating our food, Communication, forecasting the weather, directing planes at airports Wavelength = size of a honey bee
22
Infrared Write these notes for infrared: Used for heating Satellite imaging (weather) Operating remote controls Wavelength = size of a pinhead
23
Visible Light Write these notes: Only waves human eyes can see ROY G. BIV (colors of visible spectrum) Red = longest wavelength Violet = shortest wavelength Wavelength = a microscopic substance (protozoan)
24
Ultraviolet Write these notes: Can cause sunburns Most waves blocked by ozone Weather reports use UV index (1-10) Used in tanning beds Wavelength = size of molecules
25
X-Ray Write these notes for x-rays: Allows doctors to view bones Too much exposure is harmful Wavelength = size of atoms
26
Gamma Write these notes for Gamma: Highest energy and most dangerous From radioactive atoms and nuclear explosions. Used in medicine: kills cancer cells but also healthy cells (hair falls out) Hiroshima, Japan: atomic bomb dropped (caused people and buildings to instantly melt and birth defects over time)
27
Glue foldable in notebook. Add the foldable to the next available page, number the page, circle the page number, and add to your table of contents

Ed Helper Homework… You will receive a handout that relates to this new standard Any time left in class can be used today however this is required homework tonight This will be due tomorrow, Tuesday December 1 st at the beginning of class This is for a grade!
