Definition of Compound Noun
A compound word is formed by putting two words together to make a new word. The new word also has a new meaning.

Classification of Compound Nouns
Closed - the two words are together with no space Example: basketball Open – there is a space between the two words Example: police officer Hyphenated ( - ) – there is a hyphen/dash between the two words Example: twenty-one

Open Compound Nouns Open compound nouns have a space between the words but when they are read together form a new meaning. Examples: police officer science fiction peanut butter full moon North America swimming pool ice cream coffee mug bus driver post office living room web page root word candy cane Christmas tree cell membrane high school vice president video game voice mail hot dog

Hyphenated Compound Nouns
Hyphenated compound words are connected by a hyphen. A hyphen looks like this Examples: one-half eighty-six mother-in-law sister-in-law over-the-counter full-time great-grandmother fourteen-year-old x-ray warm-up merry-go-round
