The What? Our current working definition – subject to modification. –Dual Optical Metropolitan Network Rings utilizing 63 miles of IRU/lease/University fiber. –10 Cisco 15454 Dense Wave Division Multiplexing nodes. –Co-location in the Rochester downtown GigaPOP. –Connects University Resources to Campus and the Internet in collaboration with Rochester Institute of Technology.

Logical Network Overview
5
The Why? Enhance research network capabilities. Eliminate costly Telco local loop. Eliminate increasing Telco costs to enhance off-site connectivity. Provision bandwidth without vendor interaction, expense and time -- flexibility. Significant bandwidth potential -- you can do a lot with two fibers and we have a spare pair as well.
6
The Key Success Factors Strong advocates across campus. Joint collaboration locally with RIT. Aligned with NYSERNet statewide. Positioned for future large bandwidth collaborations. Makes sense from a business perspective and ROI (cost avoidance and efficiencies). Strong technical staff -- not plug and play.
