Climate change and global warming

Imagine that last summer was much hotter than usual where you live. Is this a sign of climate change? Yes or no? Imagine that almost every summer for the past decade has been hotter than usual. Is this a sign of climate change? Yes or no?

Global warming In specific terms, an increase of 1 or more Celsius degrees in a period of 100 – 200 years would be considered global warming.

Climate change vs. Global warming Climate change - major changes in climate (temperature, rainfall, snow, or wind patterns) lasting for decades or longer. Global warming - average increase in temperatures near the Earth’s surface and in the lowest layer of the atmosphere. –One form of climate change

CARBON DIOXIDE up 36% METHANE up 148% NITROUS OXIDE risen 18%

What are we skeptical about? Helicopter freezing instantly Ocean rising 25 ft. in seconds Temp dropping 10 degrees per second Ice shelf breaking off – size of RI

Let’s take a scientific look… Read the scientific explanation about the event in the movie. –Is it possible? Sort correctly on the board –Prepare a 30 sec explanation of why it is or is not possible

So what is true… Read your fact about global warming and underline supporting evidence. Write 2 Truths and a Lie about your fact. –Write the 3 statements on the front –Answer on the back – which is the lie?

Everyone should know… 1.Global warming is an gradual increase in the temperature of the atmosphere. 2.Glaciers melting has caused the sea level to rise 4-8 inches in the last 100 yrs. 3.Global warming can have an effect on animals, plants, humans 4.Hole in the ozone is a separate issue from global warming 5.Carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide are greenhouse gasses

Example of the Matter and Energy Laws Global Warming Acid Rain Smog Burning Coal = CO 2 + SO + H 2 0 + Ash + (C x H x S x O x ) Light + Noise + Heat http://www.npr.org/news/specials/climate/video/http://www.npr.org/news/specials/climate/video/ - episode 4

What processes involve the transfer of carbon?

Carbon Cycle Drawing Make your own, UNIQUE, drawing of the carbon cycle. Include the following: –Photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition, diffusion, combustion (LABEL ALL) –Include yourself somewhere in the cycle –Point out where humans interfere/alter the carbon cycle

So how are fossil fuels formed?

Fossil fuel formation 1.Minibook 2.Poem 3.Creative Story

Contributors to Global Warming

Example of the Laws of Conservation of Matter and Thermodynamics Global Warming Acid Rain Smog Burning Coal = CO 2 + SO + H 2 0 + Ash + (C x H x S x O x ) Light + Noise + Heat

Simple Solutions…

Increased greenhouse gases The EPA estimates that in the last 50 years, the presence ofestimates carbon dioxide has increased 36% methane is up 148% nitrous oxide has risen 18%

Temperature change The 10 hottest years on record have occurred since 1990

The Buzz… The Earth’s climate is changing. In most places, average temperatures are rising. Scientists have observed a warming trend beginning around the late 1800s. The most rapid warming has occurred in recent decades. Controversy surrounds…? Might we be entering an ice age?

According to the EPA… Human causes include burning fossil fuels, cutting down forests, and developing land for farms, cities, and roads. These activities all release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Natural causes include changes in the Earth’s orbit, the sun’s intensity, the circulation of the ocean and the atmosphere, and volcanic activity.

CO2 Change
