UQ INSIGHT Project Debbie Terry Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Teaching & Learning) Review of TQA & curriculum review processes

UQ INSIGHT Project Current processes

UQ INSIGHT Project Current processes

UQ INSIGHT Project Review of TQA & curriculum review processes Range of issues raised with current processes: –Workload involved with the multiple processes –Regarded as ‘record-keeping’ exercises – degree of resentment exists –Don’t necessarily identify key issues or point to what initiatives should be put in place –Different ‘frames of reference’ for the data –Overlap between the TQA and annual curriculum review process –Lack of alignment between internal review processes & external accreditation processes –Relevant data difficult to access – proformas need to be re-worked

UQ INSIGHT Project Recommendation 1 a single Curriculum and Teaching Quality Appraisal (CTQA) process be introduced; the revised process be conducted by School Teaching and Learning Committees, and overseen by Associate Deans (Teaching & Learning), through the Faculty Teaching and Learning Committee; the process be completed by the end of September each year; the process be conducted at school-level, involving a review of the school’s programs using teaching and learning indicators that relate to load, demand, student success, student satisfaction (current and graduate), and graduate destinations;

UQ INSIGHT Project Recommendation 1 ctd schools be required to: – (i) summarise the outcomes of their review of their programs on the core teaching and learning indicators; – (ii) identify the strengths of their teaching programs; – (iii) identify areas for improvement; – (iv) outline the proposed strategies and timeline to address the identified areas for improvement; and – (v) describe any other proposed T&L initiatives. the process be supported with a web-based template and a CTQA dashboard to present the teaching and learning indicators data in a clear and accessible manner http://www.mis.admin.uq.edu.au/content/dashboards/ctqa/ctqa.aspx

UQ INSIGHT Project Recommendation 2 all teaching programs (or suite of programs) be subject to an Academic Program Review (APR) every 5 years, with major generalist degrees being reviewed every 7 years (in line with the current policy); in the case of programs that are subject to external accreditation, the timelines for the APR and the external review be aligned; the APR process be overseen by Associate Deans (Teaching & Learning), and conducted by the School T&L chairs for school-based programs;

UQ INSIGHT Project Recommendation 2 ctd for cross-school and cross-faculty programs, the relevant Executive Dean/s/Associate Dean/s (T&L) oversee the review process; both student and external input be sought in relation to the core goals of the review; the APR constitutes a broadly-based and comprehensive review that focuses on the viability, quality, structure, focus, and outcomes of the program and related issues.

UQ INSIGHT Project Recommendation 3 a link between teaching quality and funding be retained, the details of which should be determined by the Budget Sub-Committee and the USMC
