COBALT CO

The Discovery Cobalt was first discovered in Sweden in 1735 by a man named George Brandt. He had been trying to demonstrate that the blue color of glass was because of a new element, cobalt, rather than bismuth, an element often found in the same locations as cobalt.

Small amounts of Cobalt are found in most rocks, soil plants and animals. Cobalt In mines was poisonous and also contaminated the desired metal such as nickel and copper.

Cobalt is a brittle, hard, transition metal with magnetic properties similar to those of iron. Cobalt is present in meteorites. Cobalt and its compounds are considered to be slightly toxic by skin contact and moderately toxic by ingestion.

Common Uses of Cobalt The most common uses of cobalt are in some of the everyday materials we use such as: magnets, ceramics, magnetic alloys, cobalt boats, glassware, steel-boating radial tires and it is also used in radiotherapy. Cobalt is widely used in batteries and in electroplating. Cobalt salts are used to impart blue and green colors in glass and ceramics.

Facts About Cobalt Transitional Metal Cobalt name came from the German word “Kobald” meaning “Goblin” or evil spirit. Humans have been using compounds of cobalt since at least 1400B.C Essential for human and animals, and gives a characteristic blue color when added to glass. Cobalt stays magnetic to the highest temperature of all the magnetic elements (it has a Curie point of 1121 o C). Radioactive 60 Co is used in the treatment of cancer. Cobalt is essential to many living creatures and is a component of vitamin B 12. Cobalt is also used in samarium-cobalt permanent magnets. These are used in guitar pickups and high speed motors.

Properties & Characteristics Melting Point 1495.0C/2723.0F Boiling Point 2870.0C/5198.0F Crystal Structure: Hexagonal Density 8.9g/cm3 Color: Silver

Where could compounds of Cobalt be found at in someone’s Household?
