ESSAY WRITING 101— COMMA RULE #2 COMMAS AND ADJECTIVES ELA 7

Comma Rule #2: Commas and Adjectives (Adjective, Adjective Noun) RULE:  When you see two or more adjectives listed in a row before a noun, place a comma after each adjective EXCEPT the last adjective.  Adjective-a word that modifies, or describes, a noun. Examples of adjectives include small, shiny, quick, smart, slow, sour, etc… PURPOSE-to make your writing more interesting and sophisticated. EXAMPLES:  I took a short, painless flight to Washington, DC.  I saw a cute, cuddly teddy bear just lying on the side of the wet, muddy road yesterday.

Where do the commas go in these sentences? Directions:  Copy the sentences on your own piece of loose leaf paper.  As you write, insert commas where they are needed.  Finally, highlight the commas and the noun. 1) I ate a greasy delicious burger for breakfast! 2) I hate long boring tedious lectures! 3) I quickly hurried past the dark deserted house through the cold rainy evening.

Check out the commas in RED. 1) I ate a greasy, delicious burger for breakfast! 2) I hate long, boring, tedious lectures! 3) I quickly hurried past the dark, deserted house through the cold, rainy evening.

Make a few sentences of your own.  On your piece of loose leaf paper, write three of your own sentences using commas with several adjectives in a series before nouns.  Make sure to highlight your commas and your nouns!
