USING DASHES IN WRITING September 4, 2015
2
A DASH IS A MARK OF SEPARATION. -stronger than a comma -less formal than a colon -more relaxed than a parentheses.
3
WHAT IS A DASH? - Dashes are used to set off or emphasize the content enclosed within dashes or the content the follows a dash. Dashes place more emphasis on this content than parentheses. Example: I know what I’m doing-it’s easy-like butter. Of course I’ll do it-as long as it’s in my favor. A dash is often used when a writer wants to emphasize a specific phrase or thought. Used sparingly, dashes can make your writing sound more sophisticated.
