Erikson – Identity vs. Confusion Even the most well adjusted teens will experience some confusion Confusion can be a serious problem for some Social and cultural influences have a strong effect on an adolescence sense-of-self Peer pressure is the biggest influence on an adolescent Trying to conform to others can stop a teen from finding themselves Theorists: Erikson

Depression: Feelings of intense sadness lasting for long periods of time and preventing a person from leading a normal life Feeling disappointed or sad from time-to-time is normal Can be brought on by a mix of small events or one large event Feeling of being unable to cope with stressful situations Emotional Difficulties: Depression

Females have a higher risk of suffering from depression Also more likely to seek help for the depression Emotional Difficulties: Depression

Signs of Depression Feelings of sadness most or all of the time Feeling of emptiness Lack of energy Difficulty concentrating Loss of interest in social activities, school, or activities that were once enjoyed Unexpectedly poor grades Change in sleeping and/or eating habits Signs of Depression

If you see signs of depression in someone you know, you should act Talk to a parent, friend’s parent, teacher, counselor or other responsible adult If depression is not addressed, it can worsen and results can be dangerous How to Help Someone with Depression

BiPolar Disorder – Extreme changes in mood; manic (outgoing and full of energy) to depressed and withdrawn – with no causing action Previously referred to as manic depressive Mood swings are typical of an adolescent, bi-polar is beyond this Affects males and females of all ages equally Scientists believe it is a chemical imbalance in the brain Cycles of manic depressiveness can vary in time lengths No cure is available, but the disorder can be treated Emotional Development
