QUICK WRITE On your paper respond to any of the following questions. You need to continue to write for the whole time provided. What do you think makes a good speech? What qualities should a speech have? When have you heard a speech that moved you, motivated you, or inspired you? What was it about the speech that 'got' to you? THREE ASPECTS WE 'RE GOING TO ANALYZE IN SPEECHES Examine how the speaker develops the argument (logos, ethos, pathos), and what is the effect? Look at the rhetorical devices being used, and what are the effects? Determine how the speaker's leadership abilities are displayed in the speech, and what is the effect?

WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF THE ARGUMENT? Questions to ask: What is the speakers main point or thesis? How did the speaker effectively and logically lay out the argument? How has the speaker's credibility been established? How has the audience's emotions been appealed to? What evidence has been used to back up the speaker's opinion?

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF RHETORICAL DEVICES ? Questions to ask: How is the message enhanced? Is a point emphasized or driven home? Is the message memorable? Do the devices used make the message more pleasurable to listen to? Rhetorical devices are the color in a speech

ARE LEADERSHIP QUALITIES EVIDENT IN THE SPEAKER? The purpose of any speech is to motivate the audience in some way. Leaders are able to use speeches to inspire, encourage, motivate, and persuade. To analyze a speaker's leadership qualities ask these questions: Do I believe what the speaker is saying? Why? How did the speaker move me? What do I want to do after listening? How do I feel about the speaker and the message? What am I going to do moving forward?
