Bell Work: Answer the following questions wherever you complete bell work: 1.What has been the most beneficial way of learning for you in this class (notes, worksheets, primary source analysis, projects for tests, etc.)? Why? 2.Do you find that you learn more and retain (keep) more knowledge from doing projects like the Divided City project in place of tests? Why or why not? 3.If World History was only a 6 week class, how would you as the student suggest I cover all of the material? Why?

10 PHASE 1 JUNE – SEPT 1950 On 25 June 1950, the North Koreans attacked. The North Korean People's Army (NKPA) easily defeated the Republic of Korea's army (the ROKs). They captured most of South Korea. The Americans were alarmed On 27 June they (US) persuaded the United Nations to pass a resolution supporting South Korea. The Americans sent troops to Korea to reinforce the South Korean Army at Pusan.

11 PHASE 2 SEPT.-NOV 1950 On 15 September, the American General MacArthur led a UN amphibious landing at Inchon (near Seoul) behind the NKPA. Out of the 300,000 UN troops, 260,000 were Americans. In danger of being cut off, the NKPA had to retreat. The Americans drove them back and recaptured South Korea. On 7 October 1950 MacArthur invaded North Korea and advanced as far as the Chinese border. He boasted that the Americans would be 'home by Christmas'.

12 PHASE 3 NOV 1950-FEB 1951 Now the Chinese were alarmed. On 25 November, 200,000 Chinese troops ('People's Volunteers') attacked MacArthur. They had modern weapons supplied by Russia, and a fanatical hatred of the Americans. Then, on 31 December, half a million more Chinese troops entered the war and attacked the Americans driving them back. They recaptured North Korea, and advanced into South Korea.

13 PHASE 4 FEB. 1951-MARCH 1953 MacArthur reached the 38 th parallel in March 1951. Truman told MacArthur to stop. MacArthur was sacked when he publicly criticized Truman’s order. In 1953, Eisenhower became American president. The Americans threatened to use the atomic bomb if China did not stop fighting. The Chinese agree to a truce, which was signed on 27 July 1953. It is estimated that 10 million people died in the war - as many as died in the First World War.

14 3-15-12 Bell Work: Consider the following situation: When you get home from school today you see on the news that China has paid Mexico and Canada a large amount of money to allow Chinese nuclear missiles to be kept in Canada & Mexico and aimed at the US Border. The Chinese President comes on the news and states that these missiles can be launched as easy as pushing a button. React to the following in a complete paragraph: How does the above situation make you feel? How do you think the US government would respond? Do you think a sense of panic and hysteria would consume many US citizens?

16 Duck and Cover Activities As we watch this film that was shown to students in the 1950’s think about the following questions (you will answer them after the film): 1.Do you think this film was useful to middle school students in the 1950s? Why? 2.If you were a student in the 1950s what would you think of this film? 3.Do you think this film is propaganda? Why or why not?

17 Duck and Cover Poster For the remainder of today complete the following: 1.Pretend like its 1955. Kofa Principal Mrs. Thompson has put you in charge of creating posters teaching kids how to as well as the importance of duck & cover. 2.Your poster needs to include the following: A.Instructions on how to duck and cover. B.A quote, saying, motto, etc. on the importance of duck and cover. C.Color and effort must be used!

18 3-16-12 Bell Work: You have five minutes to look back at and study the bell work from this Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. You will have a bell work quiz over those days beginning in 5 minutes. Split a half piece of notebook paper with a neighbor and number it 1 to 5. Skip 3-4 lines in between each #.

21 Cuban Missile Crisis (CMC) In place of 20 minutes of notes, you will watch a 5 minute video summarizing the Cuban Missile Crisis. We will get much more in depth next week with the CMC, today you simply be introduced to the topic. As you watch the film, record in bullet point format, 5 pieces of information you learn about the CMC.
