Fair Trade in BSB! What if British School of Brussels would become a fair trade school? What will we have to achieve? Will it help the school to become a better place? When would it happen, now, in a year? Why would it be a gift for farmers and a gift for our school?
2
What Fair Trade is and why does it help a lot of people? Fair Trade is trade where all those involved in the process receive a fair/honest share of the profits of that trade. Fair Trade shows a decent price for the products and it helps those who in normal trade would receive very little money for their hard work. Fair Trade also ensures that no children participate in making the products and adults work under decent working conditions.
3
Why is Fair Trade important? Fair Trade Qualified products are important because it impacts the lives of over one million Fair Trade farmers and their families, who are located in 58 different countries. Fair Trade raises the living standards for these families and offers an inclusive development of their communities. It offers true change, and not charity.
4
The Positive Impacts of Fair Trade Fair trade sets minimum standards for the pay and conditions of workers. The Fair Trade Organisation promotes Global Citizenship by guaranteeing a fair, minimum price for products. In this way, they support producers in improving their living conditions in a sustainable manner.
5
How would it help BSB? We would benefit by becoming a fair trade school because there will be more students coming to our school, which gives us more income. Also the popularity and reputation of BSB will greatly increase. The school could also advise other schools in Belgium to become Fair Trade. And the school would make a contribution to a fair development in the world creating a positive image.
6
How shall we accomplish this? We would accomplish this by selling the Fair trade products, for example chocolate, for a price which would guarantee a good minimum income for the farmers. We would promote fair trade to inform the students of the advantages of fair trade. We can also contact supermarkets and shops asking why they don’t stock more Fair trade goods, and whether they are prepared to do so. If they sell fair trade products this would increase the position of fair trade.
7
Will it be a great success? Fair trade has emerged from nowhere to become a success story of our time. From chocolate, coffee and bananas to clothes and crafts, it has now become a mainstream way for people to buy knowing they are helping some of the world's poorest people. So we believe that this would be a great success.
