Acids and Bases Notes
2
Scientists use a range of numbers, called a pH scale, to tell how acidic or basic a solution is.
3
The pH scale is the concentration of hydrogen ions in a given substance. Luckily as 7 th graders we are going to just stick to the basics.
4
On the scale..... Acids range from 0-6 A solution that tests 7 is neutral Bases range from 8-14
5
Base Neutral Strong Acid Strong Base Weak Acid Weak Base 123 4 5 678 9 10 11 12 1314 0 Acid
6
Acids have the following characteristics: *strong smell *sour taste (NEVER put anything in your mouth unless you know what it is!) *corrosive (eat away at other materials)
7
*react with metals *contain hydrogen *can burn or sting skin
8
*bitter taste (NEVER put anything in your mouth unless you know what it is!) Bases have the following characteristics: *feel slippery *do NOT react with metals
9
*can burn the skin *can dissolve things *can be poisonous *also referred to as alkaline

You can test a solution to find out whether it is an acid or a base by using an indicator. An indicator is a compound that changes color in the presence of acids or bases.
12
The indicator's shade or color will vary depending on the strength of the acid or base. Indicators include: *cabbage juice *litmus paper *pH paper
