Childhood of James B. Hunt 1. He was born on Sunday May 16, 1937 in Greensboro North Carolina. 2. Mom and Dads names are James Baxter Hunt Sr. and Elise Brame Hunt. 3. His father was a soil conserver and his mother was a school teacher. 4. When he was the age of a preschooler his family moved to a farm in Rock Ridge, outside of Wilson. 5. Hunt was raised free will Baptist.

Education 1. Graduated Valedictorian of his class in 1955. 2. Bachelor of Science N.C. State University- 1959. 3. Master of Science N.C. State University- 1962. 4. Juris Doctorate UNC-Chapel Hill- 1964.

Adult Life 1. Got Married to Carolyn Leonard in 1958. 2. Had four children, three girls and one boy. 3. He was a Beef Cattle Farmer before going into politics. 4. Was student president for 2 terms at NC State. 5. Joined the democratic party. 6. Lieutenant Governor of NC (1973-1977)

James B. Hunt and North Carolina 1. James B. Hunt was governor from 1977-1985 and 1993-2001. 2. James B. Hunt focused on early childhood development and improving the quality of teaching in America. 3. When James B. Hunt was governor NC consistently ranked at the top of the nation in economic growth, job creation and capital investment. 4. Hunt was the first governor elected to consecutive four year terms and the states longest serving chief executive in 16 years. 1. James B. Hunt was governor from 1977-1985 and 1993-2001. 2. James B. Governor 1993-1997 1. In the year 1992 he ran for governor. 2. He was elected over Republican Lt. Gov. Jim Gardener, 53-43 percent. (The other four percent of the vote was won by Libertarian Scott McLaughlin.) 3. While in office he persuaded the legislator to create Smart-Start, a public-private partnership that serves children from birth to age 5, and implemented a work first welfare reform package.

Governor 1997-2001 1. In 1996 he was re-elected over Republican state. Rep Robin Hayes 56 to 43 percent. (Scott Yost and Natural Law Party candidate Julia Van Witt received around 1 percent of the vote.) 2. Before leaving office he helped create a research park at N.C. State University. 3. In 2000, it was estimated that he appointed at least 12,000 people to state boards and commissions.

A Few Awards He Was Given.. 1. The Education Commission of the States “James B. Conant Award” 2. The Horace Mann League’s “Friend of Education Award” 3. The Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education 4. The National Mentoring Partnership “Award for Public Leadership” 5. The American Academy of Pediatrics “Child Health Advocate Award. And many others.

After Leaving Office… 1. After leaving office in 2001 Hunt went to go work for the Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice law firm.

A little bit about James Hunt now.. 1. Hunt is a member of the Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice law firm in Raleigh. 2. He’s married. 3. He has three daughters and one son. 4. James Hunt has 10 grand children. 5. Lives on his beef cattle farm in a town of eastern NC called Lucama 6. Hunt has a miniature pony named Herbie. 7. He voted for Obama in the election of 2008. 8. He’s 75 years old. 9. Chairman of the board of the James B. Hunt, Jr. Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy. 10. Hunt also raises purebred Simmental beef cattle that have won state bull tests and have received both grand champion and grand champion at the NC State fair.
