TRAILS STEM Summer Camp
3
Watch the video below… Did you notice the problem and how they solved it?
4
Notice the process is cyclical and can be repeated multiple times. Steps may also be skipped in repeating the cycle in your design process.
5
The engineering design process involves a series of steps that lead to the development of a new product or system. In this design lesson, you are to complete each step to learn about the cycle. You can always return to the design process model by clicking the button next to the home icon (but not yet). design cycle
7
In the next slide, you will explore each step in the engineering design process. Click on a step (the bubble) to review the step and then type a brief response to how you will apply this step in your own design project that we will be working on this week. Only a couple of sentences is necessary. At the end of this lesson, follow the instructions to submit your answers.
8
Work through the process by clicking the next arrow below. If you want to jump to a particular step just click on it, but don’t skip steps!
9
State the challenge problem in your own words. Example: How can I design a ______________________________________ ______________________________________ that will ________________________________? Type your answers in the boxes above and then click the next arrow below. design cycle design cycle design cycle design cycle
10
You should specify the design requirements (criteria). Example: Our growth chamber must have a growing surface of 10 square feet and have a delivery volume of 3 cubic feet or less. You should list the limits on the design due to available resources and the environment (constraints). Example: Our growth chamber must be accessible to astronauts without the need for leaving the spacecraft. Type your answer in the boxes on the next page. Click the next arrow below… design cycle design cycle design cycle design cycle

Specify the design requirements (criteria) for your project. List the limits on the design due to available resources and the environment (constraints). Remember the fan design video?
12
List on the next page your own ideas about ways to solve the problem. Sketch them on a piece of paper and use labels and arrows to identify parts and how they might move. These drawings should be quick and brief. Save to share later. Watch this brainstorming on bringing back Apollo 13… design cycle design cycle design cycle design cycle
13
List your own ideas about ways to solve the problem.
14
In this step, you should develop two or three ideas more thoroughly. Choose your favorites from brainstorming and briefly describe them below. design cycle design cycle design cycle design cycle
15
You should record pros and cons of each design idea you chose in step 4. Be prepared to share these later with the group. ProsCons design cycle design cycle design cycle design cycle
16
Identify the design that appears to solve the problem the best. Write a statement that describes why you chose the solution. This should include some reference to the criteria and constraints identified before. Think about how they did this in this Apollo 13 video clip. design cycle design cycle design cycle design cycle
17
You will construct a full-size or scale model based on your CAD drawings. We will be using 3D printers to create you prototype. Watch the video below about printing your design using 3D printing/additive manufacturing technology. design cycle design cycle design cycle design cycle
18
Later you will examine and evaluate your prototypes or designs based on the criteria and constraints. Groups may enlist students from other groups to review the solution and help identify changes that need to be made. Based on criteria and constraints, teams will identify any problems and proposed solutions. We have worked through the 8 steps in this engineering design process model. What’s left? design cycle design cycle design cycle design cycle
19
As stated in the first introduction video on the engineering design process, there is no perfect solution. Usually there is an effective, affordable, and sustainable solution that is chosen and implemented. You will have to decide when you have arrived at that point and exit the cycle. design cycle design cycle design cycle design cycle
20
What is the 3 rd step after identifying constraints and criteria in step 2? A.Select an idea B.Choose an approach C.Brainstorm ideas
22
What is the next step after selecting an approach in step 6? A.Select an idea B.Build a prototype C.Refine the design
24
Save this Power Point file. Then print the slides where you typed your responses in the white text boxes. You will need to insert the slide numbers (8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15) in the print settings area under “Custom Range”.
