and his attempt to disprove spontaneous generation

Birth and Death Francisco Redi was born in Arezzo, Italy on the 18 th of February 1627 Francisco died from an apoplectic stroke in Pisa in 1697 1627 :Francisco was born 1647: Francisco finished his studies in medicine 1657 - 1667:Francisco was a member of accademia del cimento 1668: At the age 41 Francisco does his experiment to disprove spontaneous generation 1697: Francisco Redi dies at the age of 70 of a stroke

Francisco's Life Francisco Redi is an Italian scientist who studied biology He studied at a Jesuit school in Florence He completed his studies in medicine in Pisa in 1647 After traveling to Rome, Naples, Bologna, Padua, and Venice, he began practicing as a doctor in Florence From 1657-1667 he was a member of the Accademia del Cimento (Academy of Experiment) Redi was named personal physician and director of the ducal apothecary by Grand Duke Ferdinando During his time in the office Francisco undertook a great number of experiments in order to improve medical and surgical practices.

Spontaneous Generation Spontaneous generation had been around since at least the time of Aristotle The theory of spontaneous generation is the theory that life forms can be generated from inanimate objects

Francisco’s Experiment Francisco Redi was able to disprove the theory that maggots could be spontaneously generated from meat using a controlled experiment To begin his experiment Francisco took 8 jars, and put meat in the jars, but covered 4 of the jars in muslin After a certain period of time, Francisco discovered maggots developed in the open jars but did not develop in the muslin covered jars.

Controlled Experiments A controlled experiment is a scientific investigation in which variables are controlled. A controlled experiment is done when changes are made on one variable which will likely cause another variable to change Today controlled experiments are commonly demanded by scientific journals, and are sometimes legally required by regulatory bodies

Why is Francisco Redi Famous??? Francisco Redi was most famous for his excellent demonstration of the use of controlled experiments and his challenge to the theory of spontaneous generation

Extra Facts Francisco Redi was often credited as being the first scientist to conduct a controlled experiment. Francisco was also the first scientist who demonstrated with an experiment the falsity of the theory of spontaneous generation
