1
Teaching Methodology From the Noble Quraan
2
Why the Quraan? Preserved as Revealed. Most read book in the world Factually Correct No contradictions A guide for humanity Divine
3
Teaching using Questions 1. Al-Qari'ah (the striking Hour i.e. the Day of Resurrection), 2. What is the striking (Hour)? 3. And what will make you know what the striking (Hour) is?
4
Benefits of using questions? Encourages active participation Stimulates the thinking of the learner Used as an aid to assess learners
5
Teach by Repetition And remind (by preaching the Qur'an, O Muhammad ) for verily, the reminding profits the believers
6
Benefits of repetition Repetition is the mother of learning Revise the past lessons before starting the new lesson After teaching the lesson 10 minutes after the lesson 1 day after the lesson 1 week after the lesson 1 month after the lesson 6 months after the lesson
7
Teaching using Examples The likeness of those who take Auliya' (protectors and helpers) other than Allah is as the likeness of a spider, who builds (for itself) a house, but verily, the frailest (weakest) of houses is the spider's house; if they but knew
8
Teaching using Metaphors The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the Way of Allah, is as the likeness of a grain (of corn); it grows seven ears, and each ear has a hundred grains. Allah gives manifold increase to whom He pleases. And Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures' needs, All-Knower
9
Benefits and application of Examples It is used to teach and introduce a new concept The principal is to teach from the known to the unknown Start of with what a learner know and than create a comparison to the new concept
10
Teaching by using Compare & Contrast Is one who is obedient to Allah, prostrating himself or standing (in prayer) during the hours of the night, fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the Mercy of his Lord (like one who disbelieves)? Say: "Are those who know equal to those who know not?" It is only men of understanding who will remember
11
Implementation of using contrast It is used to highlight and emphasise and idea/thought Using compare and contrast is used to help students distinguish between types of ideas or group like ideas Use charts and tables to show differences
12
Teaching in Stages And (it is) a Qur'an which We have divided (into parts), in order that you might recite it to men at intervals. And We have revealed it by stages.
13
Breakdown complex work in smaller chunks Use schedules and schemes of work to assist Teach the fundamentals first Once learners have master the fundamentals them progress to the next stage
14
Ensure that what is being taught is clear, and consisted with no possibly of erring Avoid fugue explanations or sometimes over explanation Ensure communication methods e.g speech and methodology is explicit and easily understandable
15
Teaching using Stories We relate unto you (Muhammad ) the best of stories through Our Revelations unto you, of this Qur'an. And before this (i.e. before the coming of Divine Inspiration to you), you were among those who knew nothing about it (the Qur'an)
16
For thousands of years stories have been used to educate A story with a moral at the end is much more effective than the moral on its own. Stories create interest
17
Teaching by Creating Interest O You who believe! Shall I guide you to a commerce that will save you from a painful torment
18
Create interest by using effective methodologies Create interest by using questioning techniques Create interest by creating anticipation Make the lesson exciting by being creative in the class
19
Teaching by giving Advice O you who believe! Avoid much suspicions, indeed some suspicions are sins. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is the One Who accepts repentance, Most Merciful
20
Sometimes take out time to teach values, akhlaaq and ethos Have heart to heart conversations with learners Sometimes have informal/general discussions with learners
21
Teach by using logic and common-sense See they not that Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth, is Able to create the like of them
22
Use logic to teach specific points Use questions to direct the learners focus Eg. The usage of water for istinjah
23
Learning by pondering and reflecting Those who remember Allah standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and think deeply about the creation of the heavens and the earth, (saying): "Our Rabb! You have not created (all) this without purpose, glory to You! Give us salvation from the torment of the Fire
24
Allowing the learner to reflect on their own experience has a profound impact on the learner themselves Let learners do important lessons practically Effective for disciplining and teaching values and akhlaaq Make the learner aware of what they are learning and how it effects their life
25
Teaching by using a person’s mother tongue And We sent not a Messenger except with the language of his people, in order that he might make (the Message) clear for them
26
Translation of terminologies and set works should be translated for effective learning Present the lesson to the level of understanding of the learner Difficult words should be explained
27
Teach using the pen By the pen and what they write
28
Important lessons or topics should be written by the learner Usage of writing can be done by the following means Writing summaries of the lessons Making notes Assignments Exams
29
Learning through reading Read in the Name of your Rabb who created
30
Reading is fundamental to learning Reading opens the door to knowledge Reading develops the mind Reading stimulates the imagination Encourage learners to read
