Bell Ringer #10 – 4/27/10 1.List 4 ACT prep tips that you will put into play tomorrow. 2.If you re-take the ACT, is your score averaged or is your highest score recorded?

1.What is the maximum number of distinct diagonals that can be drawn in a hexagon? 2. In the standard (x,y) coordinate plane, the center of the circle lies on the x-axis at (3,0). What is the equation of the circle?

Diagonals of a Hexagon First, draw a hexagon. Then, from a single point draw all diagonals from that point. You will find that there are three diagonals. Now, since there are six points, and three diagonals per point, we know that there are 18 total diagonals. But, this counts each diagonal twice, so we have to divide the 18 by 2 to get 9 unique diagonals.

The equation for a circle is (x - h)^2 + (y - k)^2 = r^2 where (h,k) is the coordinates of the center of the circle and r is the radius. (h,k) = (0, 3) and radius equals 3, so r^2 = 9 Answer: (x - 3) 2 + y 2 = 9

Not long ago, African Americans were still considered second class citizens in many parts of the South. They had to use different washrooms than white people and drank out of different water fountains. That practice changed due to the actions of a woman, by the name of Rosa Parks, now considered an essential figure. 1.A. NO CHANGE B. were still considered as second class citizens C. we're still considered second class citizens D. were, still considered, second class citizens 2. A. NO CHANGE B. had drunk out of different water fountains C. drink out of different water fountains D. to drink out of different water fountains 3. A. NO CHANGE B. woman by the name of Rosa Parks, now considered C. woman by the name of Rosa Parks now, considered D. woman by the name of, Rosa Parks, now considered

1. Correct Answer: A This phrase is fine the way it is. B is incorrect because the "as" is unnecessary. C is incorrect because of the apostrophe. The phrase would read "we are still considered second class citizens," which doesn't make sense in the context. In D, the two commas are not needed. 2. Correct Answer: C This sentence lists three things that African Americans had to do: use different washrooms, eat in different restaurants, and drink out of different fountains. For the sentence to be correct, the tense of the verbs should be consistent throughout the sentence. C is the only choice that contains the correct form of the verb (drink).

3. Correct Answer: B B is the only answer choice the contains correctly placed commas. In the original text, the first comma is incorrect because it separates "woman" and "by the name of Rosa Parks." C is incorrect because it separates "now" and "considered." D is incorrect because of the comma in front of Rosa. B reads the smoothest and makes the most sense.

A box contains 7 blue marbles, 4 red marbles and 6 green marbles. How many additional blue marbles must be added in the box so that the probability of randomly drawing a blue marble is 1/2? (a) 2 (b) 3 (c) 4 (d) 5 (e) 6

Answer: If the probability of randomly drawing a blue marble is 1/2 after x blue marbles were added, the number of blue marbles must be half of the total numbers of marbles. 1/2 = (x + 7)/(x + 7 + 4 + 6) x = 3

What is log 3 9?
