Argumentation/ Persuasion
2
Learning Targets I can… use language choices and rhetorical devices to evaluate a speaker’s purpose. explain how the speaker’s language choices and use of evidence/ rhetorical devices affects the meaning of their message. evaluate the validity of a speaker’s position based on the logic of his/her argument. create an argument that addresses a target audience and achieves a purpose.
3
To get you thinking: Has anyone ever changed your way of thinking by arguing their point? What about their argument made you change your mind? What are some of the most memorable commercials? What makes them stick with you and how do you decide they are worth your time? Do you blindly accept sales pitches for products/ideas without thinking and evaluating them?
4
Purpose for Argumentation/ Persuasion To get someone to do something To get someone to believe something To get someone to change his/her mind
5
Persuasion vs. Argument Argumentative writing: -contains objective language -is based on solid facts and evidence -is free of personal bias/ emotions Persuasive writing: -contains subjective langauge -is rooted in illogical evidence -relies on the credibility of the writer
6
Evidence for a successful argument includes: Data Facts Documented history First-hand observations or experiences Information from reliable sources Information from expert interviews
7
An argument has… LOGICAL APPEAL A statement of position (purpose) at the beginning Logical sequencing Evidence throughout the body to support the purpose A counterargument and rebuttal A strong conclusion that restates the purpose and makes a call to action/suggests a new way of thinking. -Using a summary conclusion is like telling a reader they are inattentive or slow at grasping the idea. That’s not nice!
8
Persuasive writing includes: ETHICAL and EMOTIONAL APPEAL Propaganda (bandwagon, glittering generalities, name- calling, transfer, testimonial) Look at your Terminology Handout for definitions to these terms! An attention-grabbing introduction that identifies the purpose and the writer’s position Support for the purpose (generally ethical/emotional appeal, but logical appeal is acceptable and encouraged!) Easy to follow sequencing that includes a counterargument and rebuttal A conclusion that restates the purpose while prompting a response from the reader.
9
Key terms that are in argumentative and persuasive writing: Rhetorical devices -rhetorical questions -parallel structure -allusion Connotation Denotation Tone Mood Look to your Terminology Handout for definitions!
10
Both argumentative and persuasive writing Consider their target audience, their interest, and use appropriate language for the audience. Establish credibility, explaining the extent of their experience, knowledge, and expertise on the subject. How would I pitch my used Corolla differently to students in comparison to their parents?
11
Main idea There is a lot of overlap between argumentative writing and persuasive writing The key idea to remember is that argumentative writing is rooted in logic, contains evidence and is objective, while Persuasive writing is filled with illogical evidence, emotion, ethical appeal, and is subjective.
