2. March 5, 2016 Presentation – PAGE 2 How well do you assess the hazards above you? Often when preparing to do a job there is considerable thought put into how to protect those below you. Working at height permits are secured, work platforms are checked for railings and toe boards, and the area beneath is barricaded to prevent other workers from inadvertently entering the danger zone. This is clearly pointed out in the IOC Working at Heights Work Practice and the IOC Barricading Work Practice BUT how well do you assess the risks ABOVE you, and do you always put adequate controls in place to protect yourself???

3. Steps to Identify Hazards from Above 1.Contact the area supervisor and specifically ask if there are any known hazards from above in your work area. Also ask if there will be any other work going on ABOVE, BELOW, or in CLOSE PROXIMITY to your work zone. 2.While completing your pre job hazard assessment (JHA and/or Take 5) LOOK UP! If possible, physically visit the area directly above your work zone. Check for hazards Loose material, structure, rocks, ore build up, etc. Unsecured tools. Inadequate handrails or toe boards. Work taking place OR evidence of unfinished work. March 5, 2016 Presentation – PAGE 3

4. Control the Hazards Once you’ve identified the hazards it is essential that you put the right controls in place in order to protect yourself. Here are some suggestions: Before starting any work take the time to remove the hazards (unsecured tools, parts, rocks, ore build up, loose structure, etc) If you have questions or require assistance to remove hazards, contact the area supervisor. Ensure that the area supervisor clearly knows where you will be working, so that no work will be assigned overhead. Barricade the area ABOVE your work according to IOC Barricading Work Practice (IOC-S-E-WP Barricading). Tag with “Working Below”, do this for all floors/levels above where a hazard may present itself. March 5, 2016 Presentation – PAGE 4
