Bar lines Separate Measures Each bar line creates a new measure

Measures Is the space between the two bar lines In this space we place beats. Then we can divide and add note values to make rhythms We cannot subtract or multiply note values

The top number tells how many beats there are in a measure

Bottom number tells which note receives the entire beat with out it being divided or added.

Whole note – 4 beats long – numeric symbol 1 1, ( 2, 3, 4,)
