Section 6 – 6 Scatter Plots & Equations of Lines Objective: To write an equation for a trend line and use it to make predictions
2
Scatter Plot: A graph that displays two sets of data as ordered pairs (points). Trend Line: A line on a scatter plot drawn near the points. It shows a correlation
3
Example 1 Trend Line A) Make a scatter plot for the data below. Draw a trend line and write its equation. Use the equation to predict the wingspan of a hawk that is 28 inches long. Step 1: Make a scatter plot & draw a trend line. Estimate two points on the line.
4
Step 2: Write an equation of the trend line. Step 3: Predict the wingspan of a hawk that is 28 inches long.
5
B)Graph the data below and draw a trend line. Find an equation for the trend line. Estimate the number of calories in fast-food that has 14 grams of fat. Step 1: Make a scatter plot & draw a trend line. Estimate two points on the line.
6
Step 2: Write an equation of the trend line. Step 3: Predict the number of calories in a fast-food that has 14 grams of fat.
7
C)Graph the data below and draw a trend line. Find an equation for the trend line. Estimate the time needed to travel 32 miles on a bicycle. Step 1: Make a scatter plot & draw a trend line. Estimate two points on the line.
8
Step 2: Write an equation of the trend line. Step 3: Predict the time needed to travel 32 miles on a bicycle.
