“The Nature of Science” An Activity for the First Day of Class by Jason Choi Sleepy Hollow High School Westchester, NY Take a puzzle and put the pieces together to form a square, work individually. Show me once you have finished. Using additional piece also put the puzzle together to form a square. You may work with person next to you.

How is this activity similar to doing science?

What is Chemistry? Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes. Matter has mass and takes up volume. Changes may be physical or chemical.

ENERGY

Conversion: Matter has volume and takes up space. - mass is how you describe the amount of matter. - volume is a description of space In chemistry we often have to convert between one unit of measurement and another. We use metric, so it is pretty easy.

The metric system uses base unit plus a prefix to indicate different measurements. See page 13 for chart.

Problem 1. How many grams are in 1.2 kilograms? Problem 2. How many kilograms are in 4000 grams? Problem 3. How many miligrams are in 2.4 grams?

Volume is usually measured in base units of liters; however for many appliations a liter is too big. Problem 1. Convert 2 liters to mililiters. Problem 2. Convert 250 mililiters to liters. Problem 3. Convert 2ml to l. Problem 4. Convert 3.32 l to ml.
