Commercial Break In the next 20 minutes: 1) Take a 10 minute break 2) In a small group (3-4) create a 30-60 second infomercial selling one of the concepts or ideas from the presentation. Prizes will be given to the top 2 commercials

Summarization Part 1 Recall prior knowledge using DRTA form Each group reads their article Using main idea/detail chart complete summarization of the article Present to class

Summarization… Why is it important? Requires a reader to distinguish between what’s important, less important, and trivial. Process of summarization (deleting, substituting, keeping) seems simple, but it does require a high amount of analysis of the information to be summarized

Summarization Part II Make predictions about the content of the next article Write questions about what you want to know from this article Read article and complete the GIST template within your group. Place summary statement on butcher paper. Carousel through with sticky notes to provide feedback.

Summarization… Why is it important? Helpful to ELL, SPED, slow readers and all students. Especially helpful for difficult text Can be used across the curriculum to summarize: *short stories*science experiment *sections of textbook*group presentations *lecture*guest speakers *math concepts*video clips

Applications? In what ways could you use summarizing, predicting, and student-generated questioning in your particular content area? Share your ideas with your group

Break time! Please take a 10 minute break We will raffle off a prize in exactly 10 minutes so be back on time!! When we get back from break please be willing to share some of your ideas for how the previous strategies could fit into your content area.

Personal Application time Please meet with other people in your department to discuss how the ideas and strategies from today could fit into your curriculum maps and your lesson plans. Please modify/create a lesson using one or more of the strategies you learned today.

Exit Question On the front of your note card, please describe and explain one idea from today’s session you plan to incorporate into your teaching practices. On the back please write any suggestion you have for tomorrow’s session.
