Objectives Recognize 10 practices that undermine children’s ability to cope with painful or invasive procedures. Identify 10 techniques that help support positive coping in children during painful or invasive procedures. Create a personal plan to bring some of these techniques into my practice.

10 Practices That Undermine Coping 1. Laying flat 2. No explanation or preparation 3. Procedures = punishments 4. Parental exclusion 5. Extra people 6. Everyone talking at once 7. Saying “Sorry” 8. Saying “all done” in the middle of the procedure 9. Threats and blaming 10. Empty praise

10 Helpful Techniques 1. Preparation with sensory information 2. Give choices 3. Give the child a job to do 4. Include the parent in a comfort role 5. Include play before, during, and after the procedure 6. Choose just one person to speak to the child during the procedure 7. Offer the child an upright or comfort position 8. Offer the child something else to focus on 9. Be honest about the ouch 10. Use specific praise
