2 Internal conflict Definition:
The struggle occurring within a character's mind. Example of internal conflict: “Rainsford could not quiet his brain with the opiate of sleep. He lay, eyes wide open.”

3 External conflict Definition:
Struggle between a character and outside force such as nature or another character, which drives the dramatic action of the plot. Examples of external conflict: Rainsford and the sea (nature) Rainsford’s hunger Rainsford and Ivan Rainsford and Zaroff Rainsford and the dogs

4 Antagonist Definition: Descriptive example of the antagonist, Zaroff:
A person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something, especially the protagonist in a literary work. Descriptive example of the antagonist, Zaroff: “A smile spread over his brown face. Very deliberately he blew a smoke ring into the air; then he turned his back on the tree and walked carelessly away, back along the trail he had come.”

5 Protagonist Descriptive examples of the protagonist:
“Rainsford forced himself on toward that gap. He reached it. It was the shore of the sea. Across a cove he could see the gloomy gray stone of the chateau. Twenty feet below him the sea rumbled and hissed. Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Then he leaped far out into the sea ” “A man, who had been hiding in the curtain of the bed, was standing there.” “‘Rainsford!’ screamed the general. ‘How in God’s name did you get here?’” “‘Swam,” said Rainsford. ‘I found it quicker than walking through the jungle.’” Definition: The leading character or one of the major characters in a drama, movie, novel, or other fictional text.
