AP LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION “IT’S A ‘TO BE OR NOT TO BE’ THURSDAY!” January 12, 2012 – Mr. Houghteling

AGENDA  The most famous speech in all of history?  TP-CASTT!  Book Club

First Reading  Annotate as you listen to the soliloquy.  Try to notice elements of TONE and mark any questions or comments you may have directly on the handout.

Individualized Choral Reading  Read the soliloquy aloud until you encounter an endmark:  a COLON :  a QUESTION MARK ?  a SEMI-COLON ;  a PERIOD. or  an EXCLAMATION POINT !

To be, or not to be : that is the question : Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep; No more ; and by a sleep to say we end The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep ; To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub ; For in that sleep of death what dreams may come When we have shuffled off this mortal coil, Must give us pause : there's the respect That makes calamity of so long life ;

Create your own TP-CASTT sheet  TITLE—with the title of Hamlet, what is this soliloquy about?  PARAPHRASE—on the text itself!  CONNOTATION—look for literary devices.  ATTITUDE—that means TONE!  SHIFT—where does it happen? What is its effect?  TITLE—revisit the title.  THEME—what are we supposed to get from this?

TP-CASTT Title? HAMLET Paraphrase—by endmark. Connotation—Figurative language + ? Attitude—DICTION = TONE Shift—Where is he going? Where did he change directions? Title? Still HAMLET, but… Theme: What is the big picture?

HOMEWORK Title? HAMLET Paraphrase—by endmark. Connotation—Figurative language + ? Attitude—DICTION = TONE Shift—Where is he going? Where did he change directions? Title? Still HAMLET, but… Theme: What is the big picture? FINISH YOUR TP-CASTT FOR HOMEWORK!
