WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU IN YEAR 12 English Literature AS level
2
READING In order to reach your full potential at AS (and A) level there are certain things we will expect of you… First, you are English Literature students so we expect you to read. There will be plenty of wider reading to do, both in terms of fiction texts in terms of critical/ contextual material.
3
READING: FICTION TEXTS There is a reading list on the Learning Space of texts recommended pre-18 texts. Try to read at least one a month (obviously depending on length) and keep your reading log sheets updated. You will also be required to read a Gothic text when studying ‘The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories.’ Again, you can find this on the Learning Space.
4
READING: CRITICAL MATERIAL In order to understand the primary texts fully and to meet the assessment objectives in the exam/ coursework. There are several sources you can use: The Learning Space Jstor Emagazine Google Books Libraries!
5
HOMEWORK Each teacher will expect you to do a piece of homework every week. This should take you about 2 hours. You will also be expected to do at least 1-2 hours of reading every week. You are more than welcome to do more than this if you like! There will also be a half-termly essay…
6
ESSAY WRITING Each half term you will also be expected to do a formally assessed essay of about 1500-2000 words. Please also read/ use the essay writing top tips (on the Learning Space).
7
CONTRIBUTING TO DISCUSSIONS As A level students you are expected to be dynamic, enthusiastic and independent learners. We (teachers) are your facilitators but we will not be telling you answers! Please make sure you come to lessons with ideas, share these and listen carefully and sensitively to others’ views.
8
THE OBVIOUS STUFF Make sure you have read the primary texts. You will be very lost if you don’t. Please ensure that you have all your equipment with you for lessons: paper, books, pens, iPad. Good luck! Enjoy this year (and next).
