3  What motivates people?  How do we motivate others?  How do we motivate ourselves?

4  18% of American workers are unhappy at work and not productive.  52% Employees perform without enthusiasm or care for their work.  29% Employees work with passion and feel a deep connection to their employer.

5  What is the cost of an unmotivated workforces?  $300 Billion in lost productivity each year.

6  Engaged employees = more productive employees.  Engaged employees were 43% more productive.

7  U.S. Department of Labor shows historically low “quit rates.” Quit rates are down by 40%  Employees who want to leave their jobs aren’t leaving.  4 out of 5 employees would leave their job if they could but are waiting for the job market to improve.

8  What were you in High School?  81% of teacher’s pets and 76% of cheerleaders were overall satisfied with their jobs.  21% of geeks and 18% of class clowns were dissatisfied with their jobs.

9  What were you in High School?  59% of teacher’s pets and 57% of athletes were generally satisfied with their jobs.  32% of student government members and 31% of geeks were dissatisfied with their jobs.

10  Money?  No, not money.  Monetary incentives lack “trophy value”  Employees feel awkward discussing with others  Cash awards are forgotten & tend to be spent on everyday items  Cash is perceived as part of the employee’s compensation package and not part of an incentive program.

11  Top incentives that would make employees better engaged in their work:  27%More opportunities  20%Career development opportunities & training  15%Flex job conditions (flex time, control over workflow)

12  Top incentives that would make employees better engaged in their work:  9%Improved cooperation among coworkers  8%More challenging work  7%Better relationship with manager  6%Greater clarity about their own work preferences and career goals.

13  2000 workers surveyed:  69% said Praise and Recognition is more important than Money.  Four out of five said recognition or praise motives them to do a better job.

14  Increase communication between you and your staff.  Treat all staff fairly, with trust and respect. If you treat your staff like idiots, you’ll have a group of idiots.

15  When correcting staff performance, balance criticism with praise.  Remove the “negatives” from your group: gossips, Negative Nellie’s, etc.
