First Punic War Romans sent to Sicily to prevent Carthaginian takeover. Romans encountered powerful Carthaginian navy. So Romans had to build up a navy. War – 20 years! Romans defeated Carthaginians on Sicily. Carthaginians forced off Sicily; Romans began to rule

Second Punic War Carthage expanded to Spain. Rome didn’t like it! Hannibal – Carthaginian general “Take the fight to Italy.”

Hannibal’s army kept going through Italy. Rome’s strategy - - General Scipio invaded Carthage itself. Hannibal had no choice but to go back to defend his own land. Scipio and the Romans defeated the Carthaginians.

Carthage gave up Spain to Rome. Carthage gave up its navy. Rome now ruled the western Mediterranean. Third Punic war – Rome burned Carthage took 50,000 as slaves spread salt on earth so no crops would grown
